The Alice Gleinster Foundation memorial web site. In loving memory of Alice Glenister 1984 - 2003

The Foundation has been set up in Alice's name "To promote any charitable purposes for the benefit of orphans and other children who are socially and economically disadvantaged in Thailand and South-East Asia, in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing: the relief of poverty, sickness and distress, the advancement of education and the provision of facilities for recreation in the interests of social welfare with the object of improving the conditions of life of such persons. "

Whilst the Foundation was established to help disadvantaged children in S.E. Asia, we felt our first task was to help the Wat Sakaew Orphanage where Alice worked as a volunteer for three months. It may not be the poorest orphanage, but by western standards, there is a great deal we can do to help. Another factor is our close link with the Ponsamboon family, who speak excellent English and have been an enormous help. They are acting as our representatives in Thailand, which is an huge relief as we are so far away and do not speak the Thai language.

We are also hoping to send some of the older orphans to an English Camp run by the "Serendip" charity (, which Alice attended, as a volunteer, during her stay in Thailand.

We would also like to set up some bursaries, so that the more able children can progress to High School, aged 15, when their orphanage/school education comes to an end and to provide further assistance if they gain entry to University.

Other areas we are looking at is the total lack of dental care. Many children have appalling teeth and those who have sight problems are simply placed at the front of the class as eye testing is beyond their means.
